Hi. I'm a small animal veterinary nurse and I thought I would put some info on here to help anyone thinking about a career in vet nursing.

Education.
You will need at lease grade C in maths and english GCSE.
You then need to get a job at a vet practice which is registered as a training practice TP.

This can be very difficult. Such practices get at least two or three letters and CV's a DAY.

There is also a degree option. You will need a couple of A-levels in science or maths. With this option you still need to do time in practice but your uni will help you get a placement and you may not be paid. However I would recomend the degree option for a number of reasons.

If you do A-levels you will be 18 when you start the nursing course. So if you have changed your mind your options are still open. A degree will be useful even if you decide not to go into clinical nursing. There are lots of other things you can do that may or may not be related to nursing.

If more people do the degree it will help with us being seen as professionals in our own right rather than helpers.

The final reason for recommending the degree is that uni is FUN!!

If anyone wants to know more ask me or try the RCVS website.

Thank you for your information!

It is not often that someone will offer up the specifics of their job on here, unless it is in regards to a problem or it is to complain [self included Embarassed ]

But, for those thinking about a career in this field, hopefully what you have written has been informative and will push them towards the career center at school because they want to find out more about what they need to do to pursue this career path.

I have thought about environmental science personally, as of late. I acquired a parrot in August, a baby with a deformed talon that does not seem to affect her in any way other than that she holds food a little strangely, and ever since then it has heightened my awareness but also made me appreciate many things that I have overlooked before. She is sweet, and according to the vet she should not be talking until about the age of 8-9 months but she has been speaking since about 3-4 months. She will go from being sweet to screaming "what do you want?" at a ringing cell phone. It's adorable. And I would not trade it for anything. Except for when she bounces a peanut off my head and then laughs hysterically.
