Hi everyone

Ive been thinking lately that I want to maybe get into the military. Right now I’m just working full time at a family owned farm and I kind of want more out of my life, you know? I don’t mind travelling or relocating or anything. Is anyone here in the military? I could use some help.

In terms of career, military service can be a very good move.

Don't know whether you want specialist or trade training, but they've got it all, and that can lead to a very good civilian career if you decide you want one.

If you want to do pure military stuff, check out your recruiting sites and see what's available.

You'll have to pin down what you want very clearly.

Ask around, check it out with any currently serving military people you know.

Rule One of military service is Know How To Do Want You Want To Do. Meaning you need to know how to sign up for this, get transferred to that, and how the promotions and allowances work.

You need to be able to understand regs, and how the military system works. It's a bureaucratic process, so there's a bit of learning to do.

Suggest you pick something where you're really interested, and can stay committed with no sweat.

Once you sign up, you're in, and there's not a lot of scope for moving around at startup.

One thing you need to know: The military culture takes a bit of getting used to. At trainee level, some of it doesn't make sense and gets on your nerves. It's quite unlike any civilian culture.

If you're the patient type, you'll get through OK.

Brandon,

I have been in the Army for many years, and I am currently stationed in a base in Texas. I did one tour of duty in Iraq before being injured (I was blinded in my left eye). I can no longer serve actively, but I now help training new recruits. I can tell you that being in the Army is a lot of hard work but it is all worth it. The brotherhoods that you form will last a lifetime and there is no substitute for that. Good luck in your choice.

Hello Brandon,
I decided to pop in and represent the United States Air Force.

I’ve been piloting now for five years and I love it. Almost every day I get to fly. I have never been deployed into active duty so I can offer no advice on that.

What I can tell you is that being in the military, any branch, will absolutely change your life for the better.

Cheers.

Alright, I guess I have to speak up now!
I’m an engineer in the Navy. You have to have a degree in engineering, or plan to get one, before you are allowed into the program. I am in contract management- I oversee, bid on, and plan construction projects. It is a great job, I get to do what I love every day.

You might try checking out the websites for the three military branches:
Army: www.goarmy.com
Navy: www.navy.com
Air Force: www.airforce.com

Good luck Brandon.

Thanks for all the suggestions guys. It looks like no matter which branch I choose I can get a job I love. I think the biggest thing I need to decide is whether or not I want to get into a job where I can be deployed into active duty.

Definitely. It’s up to you, man. Seriously, if you pick something you think you’ll love, you will not regret it. By the way, how old are you?

I am turning 20 soon. I’m leaning toward Navy right now, there is a section on their site for “Emergency, Fire and Rescue”. I’m a volunteer firefighter now so I think this is a good choice.

The military can be a good move, and you can learn a lot of things. Mainly, what branch you choose should have to do with your personal interests and what you are thinking about doing as a career.
