where to start. i have 11 GCSE's and 4 A-levels, i went to uni to study hospitality but never graduated as i got drawn out by the promise of big money in pub management. Being a landlord nearly killed me with the hours and alcohol so i went into mobile phone sales for the past 3 years. I'm now 25.
The problem is i feel stuck in a rutt, i have no job satisfaction at all and its a real effort to get out of bed in the morning, im constantly unhappy and angry which is affecting my relationship and i'm permanently tired. I need a change
I'm the sort of person who likes a challenge, i class myself as a decent leader and without meaning to sound big headed im a fast learner and intelligent bloke. However i turn into a petulant child if people patronize me, i don't have the mentality to do the same job day in and day out, i need variety otherwise i lose interest and i need a certain level of wage to be able to afford my commitments etc. I just dont know what to do!!! Any help would be much appreciated |

Well, it's for damned sure the one thing most employment is not is "challenging". It's tedious, boring, mindless, and unfulfulling labor. Over fifty employers later and I'm still feeling exactly the same way as you are. So double your age and try to image how you're going to be when you're in your mid-fifties! Scary as hell, ain't it?
No real wisdom from me other than this:
Focus on anything and everything else in life except employment, labor, working for money. Yes, it's a regrettably necessary part of our life, but only a part. Since you've discovered that our passions and creativity and true intelligence is rarely required at a job, leave all that stuff at home. Try to be the soul-less automaton while at work and put your focus and your talents and your passions elsewhere, even if it's just sitting on a bench somewhere and feeding the crows and the squirrels. At least those little guys let you know they appreciate what you have to offer. |

Hi,
Yes it seems like your due a new career, 3 years in mobile phone sales is great experience and it seems like you have had a pretty occupied past which will always help you find further employment.
You’re in a difficult situation, being unhappy in your job affects your entire life, and it’s a rocky road. I’d suggest making a small step first, yes you may not have a clue what you want to do, but play on your experience, your very fortunate as sales it taken in high regard by an employer.
I’m not entirely sure what kind of sales you did, but I’m guessing by your comments you were more or less office based for the majority. Why not consider further sales jobs, or concentrate on being a business development manager, you’re much likely to get some more diversity in your job. Also, your next career move doesn’t have to be the career you end up staying in for years, dip your toes in the water, see whether the job is right for you, and then make a decision to move on or stick around.
I would say if you wanted complete diversity why not become your own boss, however with today’s economic down fall, I would carefully consider your desired approach.
As you already know, there are millions in the same position as you, but as it seems you have been, remain proactive, and remember to push for that job that will progress your career, in whatever you may choose.
Good luck, and let us know how you get on! |
