Hi Shamus,
I agree with Alexa's post. I would add one thing. It is perfectly ok to say you took some time off to figure out what you wanted to do with the rest of your life. If you are going back to a teaching job, state you want to make absolutely sure that teaching was the field for you. If you are going to another type of position, state how this new field is what you want to do with the rest of your life. Basically, you want to show how it was actually a wise decision on your part to take the time off as it gave you time to assess where you wanted to go with your life.
