Free Career and Job Search Advice

Hello,

I'm currently in my senior year of high school. I enjoy reading and writing, and so I'm considering pursuing an English degree in university.

I've heard about TESL programs that can be taken after completing a degree. My question is, does anyone have any information about teaching English overseas?

For example,

Has anyone here done it before? If so, was it enjoyable?

Is it difficult to adapt to the new language/ culture?

Is it a secure career to pursue? I want to be sure that things like pay are all in place. I don't want to be exploited.

Are there organizations that will help you get started, or will you be on your own?

Any advice or personal stories would be appreciated.

The need for English teachers overseas is a large one and you might find that it is a great way for you to explore the world as you teach in many different countries. There are different certifications you can obtain; usually the difference has to do with what you will be getting paid.

Hi! I am a Trainer , training students and Coporate Employees in English.
I believe that if you have a passion for teaching, you will definitely enjoy it. I really enjoy training these students and yes it does pay well. I have also opened my own Institute. So, if teaching is all that you think about when you wake up in the morning then that is the career for you.
It has tremendous potential. But it all depends on,where you are!!!!!!

I'm actually in the same boat as you are, I am also a senior- well, now technically a freshman (I just graduated Wink

). My high school was actually an international boarding school, which sparked my initial interest. So I've recently really started to research the possibilities with ESL.

Though, I must empathize with your concern about the language barrier, because as of right now- it is my greatest. However, as I was researching today, I found that some places of employment are willing to bring you in earlier for some courses on the local language.

There are many opportunities for teaching English world-wide. I have been doing this for four years. The most opportunieis are for native speakers with a TEFL cert. course at least 120 hours long. It helps to have a degree as in some countries you must have a degree to work legally (Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, and all of the Middle East). In other places you need to be a EU citizen (pretty much all EU countries including Eastern Europe).

Latin America and S.E. Asia are pretty easy to break into as is China (People's Republic). There are many jobs in Mexico, a few in Central America, a good number in Panama, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Argentina, Brazil, Chile and in most of the South American countries.

China is always in need of ESL teachers. Thailand requieres a degree but many people teach without one. Cambodia and Vietnam also have a good number of jobs.

That was my first ESL book and it gives a very good overview.

Take a real TEFL course, not an on-line or weekend course. Those are a joke. Invest a few dollars and you'll be glad you did.
