I am having a traning assesment at a M&S tomorow morning. I will be put in a supervisors position in the food section and will be assessed. I almsot have no work experince, but somehow I really managed to get through the interview reall really well. I know I that the supervisors position is about observing and looking after a small group of staff. But I am worrying about certain questions I will be asked.
1. Which actions should I undertake if an employee overperforms and exceeds his goals, and may look for further respsonsobility in the company, how will I manage with them from day to day bases?
2. If an employee underperforms, how should I deal with him.
3. How do I motivate people?
Question 2, I think that I would know how to anwser that but not sure wehather it is the right anwser. I would say that I would confort him and ask him what he doesnt udnerstand and would show him how to do the task probably, if he makes the same mistake again I would give him something else to do, if he is unable to do another task, i would fire him. now does that sound a bit too harsh for an anwser??
I would also like someone to suggest anwsers for question 1 and 3 and also give me advice on other issues I should be addressing.
Could someone reply really quickly, because I have the assesment in the morning.

Your answer for the second question is decent. As for the first one, if you have someone that is overperforming, then maybe you should give them a new set of challenges or increase the pace of the job to keep up with their skill level so they do not get bored at work. As for the third question, there are many things that can motivate people but thanking and praising them can go a long way, as can showing that you are willing to do the same type of work. Finally, recognizing when they do something well and rewarding them in some way.

Question 2: You may have to do just that.
The strictly correct answer is that you should find out the problems, and particularly if the staff member has any acceptable reason for underperforming, so you're not taking any unfair action regarding their employment.
But- You're obliged to make it clear that the underperforming employee must is required to perform up to standard, to remain in the job.
That's not an option, it's what you're required to do as a supervisor. You don't have a choice.
Question 1 is easy. You reward the employee, both as a reward and as an incentive/motivation to other staff. You can do that with a good performance report, or a communication to management, informing them of the staff member's achievements.
Question 3 involves showing staff a path to achieving a career goal or a promotion through their work. Motivation is one of the more demanding questions, but it's really about leadership. You're leading your team and giving them incentives. Lexa's answer is also very relevant, regarding praise and showing appreciation. |
