hi, i'm a pennsylvania resident and i recently started receiving unemployment benefits and i have a question. i recently got a notice in the mail from careerlink for some Pennsylvania Profile Reemployment Program (PREP) saying that i've been selected to attend. the closest location for it is very far from where i live and very early in the morning and it says that "failure to attend the PREP assessment may result in the disqualification of my unemployment compensation benefits." does anyone know if i don't attend it if i really will lose my benefits?

Just call 'em in the morning and find out. Found mention of it on a blog and the lady said it was mandatory. But I'd check with the agency itself.

I had this same problem in New York state. It is a basic assessment skills meeting to match you with potential jobs the Unemployment Office may have. Yes, it is most likely mandatory. On the good side, once you get past it, most of your involvement with them will be either online or via snail mail.

Call the office as it is most likely the nearest Unemployment Office to you. Explain the situation, and ask for alternatives and suggestions. If you ask for ideas instead of outright telling them you can't attend, they will be a lot easier to deal with. Government agencies such as Welfare and Unemployment don't like to hear "no" or any hardships when it comes to their rules. Don't lose your temper, and don't state problems with an attitude as this will set them off against you from the word "GO".

Be prepared to jump through hoops to satisfy their job-seeking requirements as well.
