Hi all, new member here. I have recently been approved for CAT. My classes start tomorrow. I made my weekly claim as directed by CAT and UI. I was told by the Training Benefits specialist and in the 2 letters I received to answer Yes to the 1st question and No to the second one ......

While you are in approved training:
- Continue to file your weekly claims to get your unemployment
check.
- Answer Yes to the question: were you physically able and available for work each day?
- No to the question: Did you make an active search for work as directed?
You do not have to look for work:

I was told to do this by both the Training Benefits specialist on the phone and by the letters of confirmation I received.
At the end of the claim the telephone message told me "there is a question about your answer Did you make an active search for work as directed? and that I need to call 1-800-361-7442 or I may be disqualified from benefits!

I'm hoping someone has the answer to this since I'll be attending college tomorrow and it will be near impossible to contact UI.

Thank you so much in advance !
Gabriel

This sounds like the "Mike" system or a variation thereof. The system obviously hasn't got anything on CAT, and works on a simple verbal response. Suggest you ring that number on principle, to cover all angles. If you get a human being on the other end, you should get things straightened out pretty quickly.

An approved course should be OK, and you shouldn't have any problems with benefits, because the CAT approval will show on your records.

Thanks so much for the reply Paul ! You may be right. They didn't even ask me any questions on training or anything close. I'm hoping I can call them in between classes without being put on hold too long. That's the main thing that is bothering me.

As an ex bureaucrat, I can tell you that they can do any benefit adjustments if required on a fixed time frame. The likely result of any hold would be "We'll process your payment in X weeks", or something equally reassuring. If there is a person on the other end of that number, you can ask about that, see if you can get any time frames or "what ifs".
