I am 19yrs old and i just worked at Walgreens, it was my first time working, i only worked for 5 months. And i was fired because of theft and shoplifting. Let me tell you about it, i know its my fault and let me explain, I first stole $21 and gave it to the manager and lied about finding it on the floor just so he can give good word to my boss the store manager so he might give me more hours. But as i know that was a stupidest way to do it, what i really took without return was a pack of cigarette, during that night i was summoned to the office and some Walgreens from higher position talked to me about the $21, i told him the real story and about me REALLY took the cigarette. Ok bottomline is i was fired and given a paper about the incident that would go to checkpoint/esteem database. It means its a retail theft database for future employers for employment screening purposes about the incident. I'm worried now and might NEVER get a job. I'm beginning to loose hope in my life. I applied a few jobs and telling them that i was a first time worker for experience. I lied tellling them that i never had a job before and its my first time. You know i can't use walgreens as reference due to what i did. But i think they will find out when they do a background check isn't it. What should i do now? I'm in a stump and im beginning to loose hope for myself. I would promise myself to change for the better.

What i'm thinking now is i must redeem myself and go for redemption on myself.

Please give me tips on what to do..... Sad

Well, start with the truth. If they put you into some kind of database [which I think I would be trying to find out more about and how it works] then there is no point in lying about anything because the moment a person does a background cehck on you then it will probably show. Next, try applying for jobs that do not have to do with handling money. If you are not handling money then the employer will most liekly not care so much about the money related incident.

Well checkpoint/esteem is all about retal stores, i think an industry which is not a retail store doesn't use checkpoint/esteem for they are only for retail stores well most of it. I was planning on working on a fast food restaurant instead of retail stores. I don't think they will find out because checkpoint/esteem isn't members with each other for they are retail. But your right, im still feeling down of what i did and deserve more punishment coming to me for what i did, it may not go to my criminal record for i don't have any yet but what i did in my mind its serious. Okay thanks man, but i still need a few more help. Please give me more tips. Sad

This may not make you feel that much better but I was fired from walgreens for the exact same thing you did except that I was caught after 10 months and I took much more (i never stole from the register which is maybe why it took so long for them to catch me). i havent gotten even so much as a phone call from any company in the retail business (Best Buy, Office Depot, Lowes etc) after I was fired whether I put walgreens on the application or not. I finally got a job as security at LA Fitness, a gym in my area. So I guess to repeat what the others have said above you, apply somewhere that has nothing to do with retail.

P.S. now i want to ask a question. Would a casino use a background check system like checkpoint or would they just use a criminal background check. I ask because I want to go be a poker dealer at a casino and I have NO criminal records, arrests, etc.

Well, let's see:

You're nineteen, just starting out in the world, and your first job lasted only five month?

Why mention it at all?

Keep looking and applying as if each would be your first employment and forget about Walgreens--except, yes, how you screwed up. Then again, that's how we really learn, from our mistakes. The only stupid ones are those who don't learn and, more often than not, they are the real thieves and crooks and liars who become CEO's and presidents of nations.

Seriously, I'd never tell another living soul about what happened, period.

And yes, you'll move way beyond this.

I'll just be glad it doesn't go to my criminal record since it didn't involve cops. That would be very scary thing. Sad
