I have been on unemployment for some time and then found a job. I worked a few days which I have not even claimed on unemployment yet. I am afraid to claim this though because of what it could do to my unemployment. Any ideas? I am freaking out! I don't want to claim the income or that I had a job for a few days if it will mess with my unemployment. Anyone know how this would pan out?

Thanks

Since you're on unemployment, you're required by law to report any work and income received. That's unavoidable, and if you don't do it and they find out about it, you'll have something to freak out about. It's not worth even thinking about not reporting it. UC can check SSN information and other data from employers as standard procedure, so it's pretty hard not to find out about who's on benefits and receiving salary payments.

Please note: Not reporting work and income is by definition a breach of eligibility requirements. You wouldn't have a toe to stand on, and you'd disqualify yourself.

What usually happens with the income is a reduction in benefit based on a ratio of the amount of salary received. The ratio varies from state to state.

Reporting doesn't necessarily affect benefits at all, apart from adjustments due to income received. Unless there's some other factor involved, or something which would make you ineligible to receive benefits, it's all business as usual.

are you still working at this job?

when you got your explanation of benefits, you were told how much you could make 'on the side' without affecting your unemployment. example: when i got mine, i could make up to 145 per week.

go ahead and report it and see if it affects your unemployment. even if this is a permanent job, you may be able to at least collect partial unemployment for those weeks.

I guess I didn't clarify that I was only at the job for a couple of days, which was working for a friend of mine. He paid me cash. I am afraid of claiming the income because I don't want to lose my unemployment for "finding" a job, and then "losing" it, or however unemployment will translate my situation. I hope that clarifies, and thank you for the responses.

This would qualify as casual work, not full time. No real problem in terms of reporting it, as long as you make it clear this was only casual.
