Hi there, I'm a 20 year old guy getting ready for college this fall with big choices to make, I've been in a state of bewilderment and uncertainty for a few days now, it's really getting to me now, and I need help. I have my classes set for college for Computer Programming and Micro Computer Applications. I don't know if this is right for me, and I will probably change it before it even starts.

What are some good careers that pay 50k-60k a year and are in the computer field ( or anything that gives you an office to work in ). I'm wanting it to be a steady job with no deadlines or projects to meet, and gives you an office to work in similar to my dad, although hes a quality control food manager. I can't do overtime either.

I'm looking down the road when I'm 60, and I found out computer programming can be pretty demanding for that age which steers me away. I'd like to know any possible career options that involve computer work in an office, or anything in general, that doesn't take lots of memorization or any complex math ( I dislike math ). Thanks guys this is so important to me, I just want to clear some fog up. Sad

On a side note: I enjoy computers, and what makes them up ( the hardware ), I like troubleshooting our PC's. PC Gaming is a big hobby of mine.

Computers are huge and there are so many careers you could pursue, so I suggest taking a few courses before worrying about which direction you want to be specific in. If you are interested in gaming and the like, I would get with a career counselor at school and let them know your interests in the field but your uncertainty as well. They may be able to help you decide on something, or at least point you in the direction you may want to go. I recommend getting a book of career tests too and trying a couple to see what happens.

Computer programming is the first step.
Most programmers move on to become application designers
Some Systems Analysts
Some project managers
Others IT entrepreneurs.

Not all do of course, I have known some brilliant programmers who have spent their life programming. The deadlines are tight and the pressure is high in these jobs.

"'m wanting it to be a steady job with no deadlines or projects to meet" -- Employer employ you to do work for them on time and of good quality. No one will pay you for nothing. Well maybe a government bureaucrat hidden in some office is the best job for you!

Have you talked to the campus counsellor about this ?
