We've had a case of a really nasty link being posted on the site recently.
We checked out a post this week, and just clicking on the link produced 13 bits of malware, including 5 Trojans, one of which was a hijacker, and another was a phishing and keystroke reader, so Be Careful.
Things to look out for
If you hit a link, and it goes to a site you're not expecting, be very suspicious.
Hit your antivirus software, and do a full scan. It's a nuisance, but it's a lot better than being suddenly hit by what this stuff can do.
If your computer starts loading things, or acting strangely, you've got some sort of problem, for sure. Try a full scan, or get some help.
In any of these cases:
Don't access anything personal from that computer, if you can possibly help it, until the computer's known to be safe.
One of the links went to a page called "Webfetti", which gets a lot of flak across the net for being a spyware and malware site. You'll see various posts with examples of problems on them. Fortunately malware is rare, but if we find anything, we'll tell you about it.
To stay safe:
1. Use a real time scanner for your anti virus, and do regular scans. Make a point of learning what you can do about cookies, etc.
2. Be wary of any odd texts in messages or posts. (These can contain code)
3. Develop some healthy paranoia about anything that just looks wrong.
4. Search any sites without hitting the links, see if there are any complaints. Just search the name, + scam.
We do all we can to protect our members, but the best portable security you can have is your own sense of danger.
Worry before you've got something to worry about. |
