I’m looking for opinions on a couple of things here. One, recruiters and what people think of them. Two, I’m looking for other ideas for job search tips. Someone tell me another way around the newspaper and temp agencies.

Recruiters are out to make commission. They get paid for the number of positions filled. They work for the companies they represent, and sometimes are an employee of the company. If you want to use recruiters you will need to get used to both the phone and email getting flooded with any offer they can throw at you. Half the time they will call 50 people to fill one slot and its first come first hired.

I’ll tell you a good job search tip, use more than one way. Don’t stick with just recruiters, or the internet or any other single method. Use them all.

Agree with Tommy - recruiters are out to make a commission. They're usually great at getting your Resume in the door but after that I would be careful - especially around salary as they'll just want to place you and won't be thinking about your best interests on the salary side of things.

I always have recruiters ringing me offering the 'next best position' but I rarely listen. They are helpful though when you are looking, once it gets to the interview stage though be careful about their advice.

So some good and bad bits.

Personally, I only use the internet and recruiters. I'm in a fortunate position to be able to pick and choose jobs because my industry is an employees market. But beforehand, I used all 3 methods as Tommy says. I used internet applications, recruiters and applied direct to companies.

What industry/job role you looking for and what country is it?

One problem you’re going to run into I can tell you about when job searching is too often people lie on their application to get the job. When I was employed I saw this too often. People with experience didn’t get hired because of someone else who gets hired and then is found out to not have half the experience they said they had. Keep looking and remember that its not your fault if you don’t get called for the interview. There are like 50 people for every one job out there now; and half of them are faking it.

Another issue that comes up anymore is how many languages you know. I’m finding that many jobs want bilingual applicants simply because of who and what they deal with daily. I’ll tell you something which became a job search tip for me was knowing more than one language.

The language thing is a big issue with college grads. We’ve all realized that having more than just the native tongue helps with interviews and the range of jobs available. America may have set the original standards years ago, but those standards got passed by countries like China, India and Japan. Now we have to match the new standards or get left behind. Having two languages shows that you are willing to take on new skills and are not afraid of learning new ideas and ways of thinking.

Here’s a job search tip I can tell you from a seminar I went to about resume writing. Don’t put anything that isn’t relevant to the job, and don’t put anything on the resume that’s over five years old. Another thing they told me was not to put specific dates anywhere on the resume. I’m 41 and I’m being seen as overqualified because of the age. Your resume needs to sell the experience without letting on how old you are. When you get the interview, you got to sell your skills so they don’t see the age issue.

Another thing you might consider is how you write your cover letter. That’s the first thing employers see even before the resume. If the cover letter doesn’t make them look at the resume, you won’t even know it.

If you don’t have a job, get one even if it’s a holiday job. I had a permanent job for ten years and I was getting offers of employment from everywhere. Once I became unemployed, I couldn’t find anything. Employers tend to think “unemployed” means unmotivated. Get a temp job to fill the gap while looking for the real job. That’s the best job search tip I can tell you.

Think about moving out of the area. I don’t know how tied down you are, but I’m already wondering about moving from where I am because of the unemployment rate here. My job search tip for you, tell yourself that it might be better to look where the jobs are and then get there.

Very interesting topic here everyone! With regard to temp agencies and newspapers, well you might often find yourself visiting or viewing quite a few. With so many different options, it’s difficult to know which route to take; we now also see thousands of job boards, along with employers advertising vacancies directly.

Tommy made a great point about expanding your horizons, using different methods and searching multiple websites etc.

I’d like to tell you about our new website “Recruitment.com” that has just launched in beta testing. Like you, I found that searching for a career could be made a little more convenient, and I can relate to people who want to find work in a simple way without having to sift through multiple sources (I think we all can).

We’ve created a job search engine which allows for job seekers to access jobs from all over the web in a single search, think of us as a Google for jobs! We partner with a variety of job related websites from across the web including job boards, recruitment agencies, newspaper websites and company websites directly, and display their jobs in a huge database which allows you search one website instead of hundreds.

I hope you all find our website useful! Good luck if your currently searching!
