Hello all. I'm 17 years old, a huge computer enthusiast and about to go into college in september for a It Practitioners (Networking) ND. The outline of the course is basiclally networking, computer support, etc. Anyway, recently i've been doing some thinking and I can't see myself doing this kind of work all my life, i'd much like to do something a bit more exciting. I'm also a big film fan, especially the special effects that goes into it, a personal favourite show for their special effects is Supernatural.

Anyway, I'd very much like to be doing special effects for films/shows one day myself, I know the basics of what software it uses, how it's done etc.. but I'm not really sure on what course would teach it, and at what level? Obviously a university would teach it, but would it be taught at college level? All my college does is animatrics (excuse the spelling if that's incorrect) and I'm guessing there's a slight difference in animation and the special effects that goes into these types of shows. I'm probably too late to change my course now anyway (enrollment is this friday and it starts formally in september) but I was wondering if with a qualification in my current course I could go on to learn what I want to at university level, i've done some research and the SFX course at Bolton University is exactly what I'm after, although they don't mention much in course info when it comes to entry requirements. Thanks for anyone who read this far, it's certainly a lot to read, and thanks to anyone who helps.

To do special effects, you might be looking at a mix of art and computer science degrees? I am really not sure. You could:
research the field
ask someone working in that position what kind of schooling they had to take
ask your guidance counselor

Hi Mr Joey

The entry requirements for the SFX course at Bolton Uni are 240 UCAS points (at the moment). The reason this seems a bit vague is because there are no specific subject requirements - you don't have to have studied animation or art or computing or anything in particular - you just need a burning desire to work in special effects. Your BTEC National Diploma for IT Practitioners (Networking) will be just fine, but you will need to achieve MMM (three merits) to get 240 UCAS points. You'll also need at least 5 GCSEs (or equivalent) including Maths, English and Science at grade C or above. Your college tutors will help with your univeristy application form (through UCAS) later in the year.

You've probably already visited the course website but just in case you haven't visit http://data.bolton.ac.uk/SFX// for more info, images etc. Have a look on YouTube too - some of our students have posted some of their work there.

Obviously you're also very welcome to visit us - you can have a good look around the Bolton Uni campus, go to the SFX presentation and meet the tutors, find out about student funding etc - visit http://www.bolton.ac.uk/opendays for dates and times.

I hope this info is helpful and good luck with starting your new course! Let us know if you need any more help. You can email us at enquiries@bolton.ac.uk or call us on 01204 903903. Very Happy
