Hi everyone,
I am a 26 year old guy living in Las Vegas and working for casino company. During the day, I work as a Software Engineer for the last 3+ years and for the last 1.5 years, I run a small Internet Advertising and Search Marketing company part-time (evenings/weekends) with freelancers working for me in India and the Philippines.
Off late, my motivation at my day job has been dwindling and I want to quit.
Doing a day job and running the business (plus I am married) is stressful and makes it difficult for me to focus on one thing.
I want to make a choice - should I pursue IT applications consulting (which can pay me a good hourly billing rate that will double my income if I were to stay employed full time) or should I start working full time on my part-time business which, at present makes about 40% of my income from the day job. So far, I've been treating the part-time business income as a bonus not relying on it to make ends meet.
Consulting => Travel (which I don't mind at present), high billing rate, low stress job that I do well. I am tempted by the income potential here as well and the fact that the work is highly technical and with large enterprises and the skill is hard to find.
Business => Stressful envt (irate clients, managing staff etc.), but exciting growth prospects and I do like the idea of being the CEO of a mid-sized company - that would be a dream come true. I think I am an entrepreneur at the core. However, this business is much less technical, I have to deal with small business clients and staff, both of which are much less sophisticated.
I am just a bit worried about saying no to a consulting opportunity that offers a high billable rate and working on my business that will make much lesser money at first.
I need your help/advice/opinions to make a decision.
1. Should I take the plunge and work on my business.
2. Should I take on consulting for some time until the business is making more money, and then take the plunge?
3. Should I just take on consulting for a few years (while I can still travel, no kids) and then start my business back up later?
I am leaning toward #2 but I am worried whether I will end up doing the same thing I am doing now - not focusing enough on either thing.
Your opinions are appreciated. I want to know what you what you'd do if you were in my shoes...
THANKS FOR YOUR ADVICE!!
