|
|
| I have an interview in a week for a property sales representative job. I am confident that I will succeed because I have a lot of experience and knowledge in this field. However I am concerned if I should tell them that I am gay. Its not like this has something to do with the job, but I do not want to assume that they won’t ask because the last time I had an interview they did. Any advice?### |

This is a delicate subject and, if you ask me, it is advisable "not to hide" this. I'm using inverted commas because I want to enhance the fact that You should not hide this, but you should not display this neither IF you're not asked about it.
It really depends on the company you search for a job and on the nature of your job. Take this for example. You won't have problems working in the fashion industry. I don't even think they care. But with the Army...weeeeelllllll......You get the idea.
Now....as far as I'm concerned, being gay should not matter at all. But this is the world we live in, we all have to adapt ourselves in order for everybody to be happy. Should you be asked again.....you should answer in a polite way. Yes, I am, but I am assuring you thins will not represent an obstacle in my doing my job properly. Being gay is an option which relates only to sexual orientation. Short answer full of confidence.
Good luck! |

Sexual orientation has nothing to do with the job, nor does it have any place in the interview. Let me put a spin on that response. Let's say I'm a gay interviewee. Will the company or employment environment affect me because of my sexual orientation? Is the company known for biggetry, for example. Never would I work for a company that jeopardized my mental, or possibly, my physical well-being (i.e. stress causes a weakened immune system ... you get the idea).
Heterosexuals don't mention their sexual preference within an interview, so why should you. It has no relevance whatsoever, in my opinion. Now, let me put another spin on this comment.
Let's say you feel the need to reveal this information. That's okay too, but understand there might be repercussions. I'm not saying you won't get the job because of it, although I suppose that's possible, but I'm thinking more of what the interviewer might think about being exposed to the irrelevant detail. Maybe that person won't care ... maybe they'll wonder what part of the interview led you to mention it. Just my two cents. ;) |

This question put during an interview is inappropriate and discriminatory. By no means are you obliged to answer it. Job has nothing to do with sexual orientation. You can do your job just fine, even if you have other preferences in which sex is regarded.
But I also agree that people today are way mean and it has happened to a friend of mine not only once, but three times to be rejected at interviews just because he is a gypsy (yeah...that's some other sort of discrimination, but it is still a factor). |

Don't mention it. And if they ask, simply say "I don't believe that has any bearing on my ability to do the job." Change the subject if possible--perhaps by bringing up an earlier subject and adding other qualifications you possess.
And make a mental note to question whether you really want to work for these people. |

OMG. ROTFLMAO.
There are plenty of straight guys in the fashion industry y'know designing women's clothing and shoes (not that you'll find me tripsying about in 4 inch heels. OBTW the Army has a "don't ask, don't tell" policy and there are loads of gays in the military. For some reason the military and computer industry seem to attract alot of gay males - at least in my experience. |
