My girlfriend recently got fired from her job. However, this occurred midway through the interview process for a potential job. Ultimately she was offered the new job... but shes very worried about the background check.

During her initial phone interviews everything went great and her resume and discussions were 100% accurate at that point. Then a few days later she was let go and she landed a 3rd interview with the potential employer. She was not let go for insubordination, her boss just said she was no longer a good fit and could not give her clear reasons. Since it was already established that shes currently employed she tried her best to speak in the past tense about specific projects and accomplishments and be careful not to outright say she was or was not still employed. Well... she was offered the job and the potential employer is under the assumption that she is currently employed. She was really exited until tonight when she got an email saying she had to sign a background check disclosure form. She has no idea how to handle this situation. This is her dream job and it would crush her to lose it before day 1.

We tried looking for advice elsewhere but couldnt find any info.

Anyone know how to handle this?

Background checks tend to expose the ugly, and I am willing to bet that it will show up she has been recently fired. She should come clean now, before she signs that disclosure, or she will be in big trouble for sure. If they ask for a reason why, she can say she wasn't sure how to mention it, as it happened part way thru the interview process and the prior employer won't give justification. I could see her wanting to hide it for a bad reason, IF there were a bad reason.....and if she keeps it a secret and the background check reveals the discrepancy, then they are going to wonder what else she isn't being truthful about.

Come clean and cross your fingers. Your odds aren't great, but probably better.

Most corporations are actually not allowed to give out much background information due to company policy. When being used as a reference, they often only give out the beginning and ending dates of emloyment. Many times, the prospective employer is referred to an automated system.

Your friend should get in contact with the hiring manager and let them know that she just ended her position and is ready to start. If anymore information is found during the background check, she can explain that she spoke with her manager and they felt that this job was not a good fit for her. Therefore, she is looking for better opportunities to build upon her current skills.
