Got a new job - good salary and OK atmosphere. Told them start date was 2 weeks, that I need to finish up another job before I could officially start. I told them I would be happy to come in, free of charge, until then to train with the person that I was replacing. My official start day cme and I got into the office and was immediately greeted by the person I was replacing - She fired me claiming that the CEO decided to use a contractor. Through a follow up email, the CEO reported to me that he and she had "reliability" concerns. I assume they are referring to the fact that I needed to reschedule and/or miss some of the days I came in PRIOR to my first day because I had ANOTHER JOB I needed to work on. Anyway - They never gave me a chance - Do I have any recourse whatsoever?

Probably not. It's terrible that they treated you that way, because it makes no sense....you were going out of your way to help them out by trying to be there ahead of time to learn. What is bad is that they never gave you a chance. I do not know why they were this way with you, but I do not know if I would want to work with an employer who acts this way. There might have been another 'real' reason and this was the excuse they gave to you.

I would look elsewhere; they seem like a bad place to work.

Most likely any claim would be denied based on THAT job, however, depending on how you left your previous job you may be eligible to file unemployment and get it.

I wouldn't want to work there for anything - better now than later I suppose. The CEO is so shady, my ex-boss, that he sent the girl I was supposedly replacing in to do his dirty work- he didn't have the professionalism to tell me himself. She gave me some BS reason, then he mailed me with a totally different reason - She claimed they decided to g with a consultant, most likely HER, the dishonesty and unethical behavioris shameful. You'd expect this from a large corporate culture, but this is/was a small, small 20 employee firm.
