Hi,
I need some help writing a cover leter. I’ve had many jobs in the past and none of them have required a cover leter. Now that I have to write them- and believe me, I’ve tried- I’m getting turned down and I know it isn’t because of my resume. Can someone please give me some tips or guidelines, maybe even some samples? Thank you so much!

Hi gaines,

I do not currently have any sample cover letters to offer. However, you should be able to find a lion's share of them on the internet. Also, there are a large number of books that have them. If money is tight, you could also get quite a few at the library. My library also uses an electronic library, www.netlibrary.com. This allows you to look at books online. I know they have several books for cover letters on it.

As far as specific advice though, the cover letter is really just a promotion piece for the job seeker. It should highlight 2 or 3 of your best qualifications and indicate a strong desire to work for the company. It is also a good idea to add in a sentence or two about the company to show them you have done some research on the company. Other than that, everything tends to be opinion and what one person likes another may not.

Hope this helps,
Mark McCormick

A cover letter is usually considered a marketing tool, a way to introduce yourself and really hone in on skills you have that may interest the company and make them want to know more about you. Then, after they read your cover letter, they should ideally be interested and move onto take a close look at your resume.

This will give you more info about what a cover letter is, and links on the left side go to specific formats of cover letters you might be able to use:
