Hi all,

I'm in a bit of a pickle. I had 2 interviews with a blue chip company who I really want to work for. I was offered the job by email 2 days after which I accepted.

Now, they fixed my start date for 4 weeks from yesterday stating they could not extend this date as the job has been advertised for a while.

I have not received the contract yet and have called the interviewer yesterday to ask if it had been sent and they said it had. I called today saying I had not received it telling them that I have not handed in my notice because I have not received the contract. They gave a big sigh, saying that they had sent it and could not do more and said in an email I had the job.

Something here does not add up. I called the HR department and they had no record of the job or even heard of me.

How can a huge Audio Visual company interview me, send out (supposedly) a contract completely bypassing HR?

I'm in a terrible mess. Because I have not handed in my notice, I no longer can give 4 weeks to my current employer. I would be mad to resign with no contract. This new company has made it clear they cannot extend the date and would even like me start earlier.

I'm at a loss. My friend works for the company and has had a quiet word with HR who are going to investigate but now I feel this could unsettle the whole thing. But, at the same time I would like HR involved as a kind of protective mechanism. But they could really turn it upside down and find out that there was never head count for the role. Who knows?

What should I do? I think I'm right not to hand in my notice as it could go pear shape and this has happened to me in the past.

Any advice?

Agree no point in taking a risk. Not too impressive they can't get a contract organized, either.

The short answer is they can't. That makes no sense at all.

Probably just as well you didn't hand in your notice. This is decidedly not a normal, or even competent, approach to hiring anyone. To hell with them.

Whoever this is hasn't been doing you any favors. You could have wound up without two jobs.

Do nothing, forget about it. Wait until you find someone who knows what they're doing, and make sure they've got their act together.
