I am an an American, college freshman considering a career in medical interpreting, with a possible translating career on the side as well. I would like to know how I can best go about planning for an education that will prepare me to be competent in this field. Right now I am thinking about pursuing a double major in French and Spanish with a minor in health sciences to start with. But I have many questions.
I would like to know how plausible it is that I would be able to find a steady job working at a hospital in the southern United States, and also how likely it is that I would be able to find an arrangement traveling between hospitals. I would prefer the latter, but I don't know if it's practical. I'm not sure how practical this sort of career would be regardless, which is my primary concern.
Any advice about this would be greatly appreciated. Mainly at this point I'm just trying to figure out if such a career would be practical enough to be worth pursuing. |

The real difficulty here is the practicality, as you say.
The double major means a large commitment of time, cost and effort.
Working in the south means working with southern health budgets, about which I've heard nothing good, even living in Australia.
Strongly suggest you talk to the people in the field, and target some hospitals to get a few case studies. Traveling between locations could be an own goal, too, expensive and time consuming.
In all honesty, this doesn't sound like a great idea, given the state of the industry, and the fact that you'd have a career in complaints management as at least part of the itinerary.
Unless there's an absolutely reliable, no doubts whatever career path in this, I'd give it a miss. |
