I think I have been a victim of age discrimination, with regards to a recent job promotion I was not even considered from. age discrimination message boards. I know what most young people think about older people that they should make space for the younger generation, but I am 55 and still have a good 10 or 15 years to go before you get rid of me !
Has anybody had experience with this what should I do to fight this, a lawsuit is not an option since I want to stay on good terms with my employer. I work in a 300 employee firm in the manufacturing business. I looked for age discrimination message boards but found nothing of substance so I have this board can help me with this |

Hi Medina
I do feel for you. It's terribly difficult to get into a company when you're past 'a certain age' as most employers are looking for people who they can easily train and who will be a long-term investment.
As sad as this sounds, the fact is that the older a person becomes, the longer it takes to teach them new things (it's the old dog/new tricks syndrome). With more time invested in training and less time likely to be returned in service with the company, it's natural employers will look at younger candidates first. Then there's the fact that the older a person becomes, the higher the likelihood is of them falling ill and needing time off - possibly long term. I know by myself that the aches and pains I had 10 years ago were nothing compared to what I experience these days!
Is this attitude wrong? From a social and moral viewpoint, then certainly. From a business viewpoint? No.
Having said that, there are companies that have a good social and moral policy and are happy to take on older staff. B&Q is the first that springs to mind. Could you try them? Not knowing what you actually do it's difficult to say whether they could be of use to you but working for them doesn't just mean the shop floor. Their policy extends across adminstration and managerial positions, too.
On the other side of the coin, young people are often discriminated against, too. They're more likely to be hung-over, become pregnant, throw a sickie in order to go off to Ibiza for a short break etc etc. Ideally, employers would like staff to be between about 32-48.
Anyway, I do hope you're lucky and that you manage to find a job you'll be happy doing. All the very best,
