this may be a silly problem but it is getting to me, ive been in my job three months and have been asked if when my managers away i want to open up on our assistant managers days off, of course i said yes as i have been looking for a job where i can advance and i think i may have a chance in this one, only problem is a girl started about two weeks after me and i feel she may get in the way of any promotions i may be able to get, she hardly does any work around the shop, all she does is stand behind the till serving customers(which there never is a constant flow off) whilst everyone else in the shop works really hard including myself, even when shes told to do other jobs she rushes them so she can get back behind the till, also my manager said me and her can be in charge when herself and deputy manager arent there, this may sound selfish but i work twice as hard have over a year and a half's retail experience behind me, she has none at all its like my manager is blind to the fact she doesn't pull her weight like everyone else, and shes reluctent to do over time and work sundays and she was offered to open up on some sundays in the future and she wasnt keen on doing it so i will be doing it instead, i feel she isn't motivated or bothered about the job but yet shes getting all these oppertunitys that i get for working my ass off, im pushing myself so much because i really want to get on in my retail career am i over reacting or do you think shes doing little work for rewards she shouldnt be getting? advice please

Sounds like they are not treating you fairly but this is the norm, I would not be too surprised. Just keep doing what you are doing, working hard and trying to build good relationships with your boss while learning as much as you can. Focusing on this other person will only cause problems after a while.
