Work Experience
(Current since July 2006)
Specialist Joinery Solutions
The company that I now work for have been commissioned to supply manufactured furniture to a flagship development for social housing in Manchester. This project is complex and requires constant co-ordination of a variety of manufactured units with strict delivery dates and quality control issues. Since the beginning of my apprenticeship I have been on this project, with a selected team. I have also spent time in the workshop turning out some high quality bespoke pieces of furniture for clients, working on site and fitting out some nice bars around the city. In this job team work, communication, health & safety, machine and hand tool skills are tested daily. The hours I work are sometimes unsociable as some clients have a strict deadline to open, and this may require us to work throughout the night, which I have become accustomed to. This level of commitment leads me to believe I am able to cope with pressures of learning and earning my trade.
(Nov 2005 – June 2006)
Redgraves Raw Recruits - ITV 4
I was part of Sir Steve Redgrave’s Liverpool 8. The aim of the project was to train 8 young men in the technical sport of rowing so that we could compete in the qualifying races for Henley Royal Regatta – Britain’s most prestigious rowing event. I exceeded even my own expectations by making it through the hundreds hopefuls in the selection stages to become the bow man for the 8-man boat. This is an extremely important position in the boat and requires a variety of skills. Not only must the bow man be the best technically, but he must finely adjust the balance whilst the boat is level and in motion. I needed to communicate with the crew and provide feedback, whilst maintaining a constant rhythm. I knew it was a natural role for me, and over the 7 month period of intense and full time training I managed to beat other competitors and firmly established myself as a strong contender for the seat. My ability to understand, positive attitude and the esteem in which I was held by the Olympian Sir Steve Redgrave and other team members speaks volumes - not only about my athletic abilities, but perhaps more importantly my latent ability to improve myself and to encourage others around me. In addition, I was presented with a personal reference from Sir Steve Redgrave. More information is readily available online about the programme.
