Be Prepared. Have a telephone answering machine or voice mail system in place and sign-up for a professional sounding email address
Be More Than Prepared. Always have an up-to-date resume ready to send - even if you are not currently looking for work.
Don't Wait. If you are laid-off, file for unemployment benefits right away
Get Help. Utilize free or inexpensive services that provide career counseling and job search assistance such as college career offices, state Department of Labor offices or your local public library.
Create Your Own Templates. Have copies of your resume and cover letter ready to edit.
Use Job Search Engines. Search the job search engines. Use the job search engine sites to search the major job banks, company sites, associations, and other sites with job postings for you.
Jobs by Email. Let the jobs come to you. Use job search agents to sign up and receive job listings by email. All the major job sites have search agents and some web sites specialize in sending announcements.
Time Savers. Strapped for time? Consider getting help writing or editing your resume. Resume posting services that post your resume to multiple job sites at once can save hours of data entry.

Great tips! Here are some other good tips for job and internship searching:
1) Draft a Cover letter. Cover letters are a great way to stand out and be noticed, and to help the HR to have a preview of who you are before they schedule an interview. Even if a job or internship does not require a cover letter, send one anyways to show how serious you are about obtaining a position. Also, it is a great way to personalize your resume and increase the chance it will be put in the "contact" pile of resumes, and not the trash
2) Be proactive. Simple as it sounds, a lot of people just send out a mass emails of resumes and hope to get noticed. These days, with this economy that usually is not enough. It is guarantee that there are hundreds of others with the same qualifications as you do. Therefore, if permitted, follow up after sending your resume out because it shows that you are really interested in gaining a certain job or internship.
3) Network. A good number of jobs, especially higher positions are obtained because the applicant knows somebody with "hook-ups." Networking, especially on forums such as LinkedIn are a great way to get to know other people in your industry, or even higher up people in your industry and possibly be put on their watch list when you apply. Another great way to network is to go to as many career fairs as possible, or business conventions, or if your family members/friends know people, get to know them as well. Get as many business cards as you can, and remember the faces of those who gave you a business card. After talking with someone, and getting their business card, try to follow up and send a thank you email or phone call and try to arrange a meeting for coffee or lunch! Maybe they can help you obtain a job or internship later.
Good luck! |

These are all great tips!
Also, don't forget to exhaust every resource- send out resumes, let friends know you're looking for work (a lot of jobs are found through word of mouth and personal recommendations), apply on all the job boards, watch newspaper postings.
Oh and visit job fairs. They can be a good place to meet recruiters one on one and make a personal impression.
Here's a list of job fairs:

| I'm with DarkCoyote. Job fairs are good because you get to see the employer face to face. This is where it counts. Make sure you make a lasting impression on the employer so you have a better chance of getting the job. |
