I was thinking of changing careers, it has been a while in my new choosen career of a DJ and to be honest I like the life style but I am not sure if I can do this at 50.

So I was thinking of going back to my professiob, programming. However I never kept in contact with any of my references and I am not sure if I can use references which I have not been in contact with for 5, 10 years.

Should I approach my previous collegaues before listing them as references ?

If you are planning to get into your previousl field, certainly contact your references in that field. You may find they have moved around. But certainly worth contacting, to remind them of yourself & who knows they might have an opening that interests you or they may know of an opening.

As it's been a few years since you worked in your previous field, some employers may also ask for a recent reference, so have that ready too.

Many applications ask for references. A reference is someone who is not related to you who would say something positive about you. Former teachers, employers, clergymen, and prominent members of your community would be good references. It is a good idea to ask before giving anyone’s name as a reference. You might say, “I am looking for a job. Would you be a reference for me?”

Avoid clergy. It could be a turn-off to prospective employers.

It's always good to contact your references if you haven't done so in awhile. Let them know you are in search of a job now. You may find that networking leads you to your next job.
