First and foremost, yes I realise that most people have had multiple jobs by the time they're 18 and that so far I've been lazy.

So, given that's the case, what advice would you give me for looking for my first job? I know it's going to be very tricky given my age and lack of experience but I'd appreciate any help.

Thanks in advance

I would try the typical things a sixteen year old tries--movies, stores, restaurant work. One advantage that you will have is that you will not have many minor labor laws apply nor will you need a work permit.

The best thing about being 18 and on the job market is that enthusiasm counts for everything.

If you can convince an employer you're enthusiastic, eager to learn and eager to start paying you're way then you're in with a shot.

I had plenty of jobs as a teenager and I think the key to getting and keeping a job is this:
- Try to be enthusiastic and try to learn as much as you can
- Be flexible (I had to do Saturday nights for a year before I could pick and choose my days/hours as a waiter)
- Turn up on time and show willing to help out when your boss is having a tough time
- Admit that you've not had a job before, explain your reasoning (don't say your lazy) but mention that you're willing to learn and take on whatever positions are available to start 'earning your way' << employers will love it

Try the cinemas, cafes, restaurants, take-aways, shopping centres, corner stores etc.

Fill your CV/Resume with work/projects you've done at school including sports, team projects, clubs/committees, activities you've done. These show commitment, willing, perseverance, dedication, team work amongst other abilities.

Try not to be too short sighted. It's appealing to go for the best paid job, but internships and anything that's relevant to your long term career goals will be hugely worth it.

With what I did and still love doing it, I would advice you doing freelancing on the web....Especially content developing....You can earn and simultaneously learn a lot from the job.. Smile

I would say look at bar work as many places take on people without experience and train you up (if you're from the U.S this is obviously non-applicable.)

Also as your over 18 you are in a better position as you can work later shifts and work with food and equipment so down get too downhearted.

if your based in London try www.fusejobs.co.uk as they specialize in entry level positions.

Good luck
