US-

I don't like telling my current salary. One company asked for my W2. Any thoughts on this?

For what reason did they ask ?
Is it before or after they have give you an offer ?
It is in your right to disclose that information ?

It is before I get the offer. I'm just not sure what they can check on and what they can't. I have been working part time at 30,000. Sometimes they discriminate against that and low ball you because they think they can. If I were full time it would be around 60,000. I don't like being dishonest but it really hasn't helped to lay it all out there either. I really think it's none of their business and they should pay what they are planning on regardless of what you currently make. What do you think?

Most companies check on potential employees salary to make sure they're not trying to go beyond what their experience is.

You could get an admin clerk on 20k going for a 80k managers position for example.

A lot of people lie on their CV so getting information someone's salary is an extra check to make sure they are who they say they are.

Of course, trying to get a promotion through a new job is a great way of progressing your career but salary checks a part of the process to make sure someone isn't trying to move too far.

If I were you I'd be clear that the salary is $60k pro rata so you've been earning $30k and that will be shown on your form. Hence why you're looking for a salary of X.

Whilst salary is never an easy topic to discuss or disclose, it's fairly standard for companies to request information on current salary. I'm not saying I agree with companies doing it, but this has become "one of those recruitment things" that you need to go through with most positions these days.

Salary can be an ugly tpoic. I think it is unfair that they asked you but companies DO do this kind of stuff. Theya re trying to make sure that you are not out of your 'range' and that they get you at what they consider to be an affordable price. You may ask them why they want that kind of personal information and if it is typical, but in the end it is up to you if you disclose it. I do not think it will ultimately hurt you, as you can always negotiate to a higher level based on your skills.
