Hi All,

I have just registered on this forum and I am just looking for some advice really.

I was made redundant from my last job so I am currently looking for a new position. I found a job I was interested in (not alot around at the mo) so this morning I went for an interview. Now, normally I love interviews, that probably seems really odd but I just seem to be able to become the person they are looking for... I have always just been relaxed, friendly, funny when needed, and answered most questions truthfully. Well this morning I got the vibe that the person interviewing didnt take me to very well. I got the impression that she thought i was too young and possibly wanting too much money. I came away feeling quite down and not very confident about the role.

Anway, had a phone call and in fact they have asked me back for a second interview next week. There is only me and one other person being asked back so i have a good chance. I have all the experience they are asking for and I can also start asap which is also what they are looking for.

The only problem is, this morning, for the first time, I felt really nervous and under pressure and I dont know why. Now I dont want to feel like that next week because my mouth just runs away with me and i end up saying things that dont make sense etc... so I was wondering if anyone had any tips or advice on how to approach this interview - it is a lot more formal then the one today so I have to be extremly professional. Should I still go in as a light hearted friendly warm funny person or more serious?? People seem to warm to me in interviews and i just want to make sure they do next week.

As i say never had problems before in or before interviews, i enjoyed them but today - different story. Any help, advice or tips would be appreciated!

Thanks
Nik

Answers to these quesitons can help give you a better answer :

What position are you applying for ?

What kind of person did the interview ?

How many where on the interview board ?

How big is the company ?

In what industry is the company ?

Hi NikkiG,

Congratulations on making it to the second interview. Sounds like you may have done better than you thought. To help set your mind at ease for the next interview, there are really only two things you can do (1) prepare for the interview and (2) keep the interview in perspective.

(1) Prepare for the interview: these means do your homework on the company and prepare your answers to regular interview questions and behavioral interview questions. Then, practice with family and friends mock interviews. The more practice you do the more confident you will be when doing the actual interview.

(2) Keep the interview in perspective: You have no control over what the other person thinks of you (i.e, thinks you are too young or wants to much money). Since you have no control over what that person thinks, do not worry about it. Instead, state your case for why you want the job and address some of the perceived concerns they may have. But beyond this, do not worry about it. If you do not get the job, the sun will rise again tomorrow. So keep this mindset during the interview: Yes, I want the job, but if I do not get it, something better will come along.

Hope this helps,
Mark McCormick
