Hi, first time here. I never thought a job title meant anything personally, but have found out that it has become a factor in what one earns for a living. I am in a situation where I need to redefine my job title as instructed by my employer. Because of my present job title as “Quality Control Technician”, I have not been able to get a raise for the past five years because I had reached my “salary cap” years ago based on job performances. Because of the elevated cost of living these days, I am finding it hard to manage a comfortable life style. Mind you, that isn’t the main reason for me to redefine my job title.

Where I am currently employed, I perform and have performed many functions. I started out as a Machine Operator, went to college where I received an Associate’s degree in Manufacturing Processing with Honors, then assumed the responsibility within the newly formed Quality Control depart with my current employer. Along the same timeframe, I got involved with computer and learned all aspects of the MS Suite and networking. I have created many MS Access databases (many which are still in use today) and was told recently that my expertise in database development will be needed once again, as well as formulating quality controls with a new manufacturing process which will be replacing our current method.
So, back to my dilemma. To better fit my job description, what would someone label me as? Here is what I can do and what I have done in the past:

    Fluent in MS Suite.
Efficient with MS database creation and deployment.
Understanding of Quality Inspection, Incoming Inspection, writing and implementing inspection procedures.
Manipulating data to better understand and identify route causes and presenting Action Plan.
Currently involved in graphics using Adobe Photoshop for our new printing process.

Past Duties:

    Inventory Control and ordering
    AutoCAD drawing 2D and 3D
    Managed personal
Started up our Incoming Inspection department with Database implementation

Thank you in advance for your help.

Steve

Yeah, the title thing runs on rails. Because of some weird belief that a word like "Technician" has a cutoff point where it doesn't mean "doing practically everything", the definition is what does the damage.

Suggest that:

Overseer
Supervisor
Senior QC Tech
QC Systems Developer

would be more apt.

A word of warning: There's probably, tucked away in some HR closet, a series of names and grades related to titles. Whatever title you choose has to be included on that list, so there's no bureaucratic outs for whoever does the job gradings.

That's precisely what's been lousing up the whole field of job design, globally. Some petty minded bit of paperwork which means nothing, yet does so much damage.

Thanks a lot and I appreciate your help. The titles that you came up with may just do the trick. I never much of job titles until now when the pay scale is reflected on the name, not what one is capable of doing.

Thanks again,

Steve
