So I was lucky enough to get offered a last minute internship through this great organization (beginning of June!), but there are a few things holding me back.
I would be working in a pretty isolated park through the National Park Service in Alabama. I'd be creating a nature booklet for kids which I would love to do! As both an art and environmental science student, it would also be a great work opportunity for me. I've done work like this before and it's pretty cool.
CONS
There are only 6 employees and I'd have to share a house with an older guy I don't know. He seemed nice and decent when I spoke with him on the phone, but it'll be different. (I'm a young university girl from Michigan).
I returned from a study abroad trip to Costa Rica just a month ago and was pretty happy to see familiar faces. I'm a social person and having people I know and love around me is important.
I actually did an independent project in Costa Rica in which I was the only North American in a rural community of Spanish speakers. I got depressed from time to time because I felt lonely. (There was also a slight language barrier). I ended up calling home more often than I thought I would.
I am pressured and have to reach a decision very soon- I was offered the job Tuesday and have to decide by today for travel arrangement purposes.
I was offered a 2 week job at my university this summer and might be able to pick up part time work there too. I think I could also sublet from my friend in a house full of fun friends.
Though the job is kinda creative, my ultimate goal in life is to do something even more creative as a self-producing artist or writer.
PROS
Maybe the last con is why i should go? try something new in the rural south... interesting experience, right?
Good for my resume
Would be a fun project! I'm actually pretty excited about it. I'd get to illustrate and design and ... I'd like it.
Any thoughts or suggestions as to how to make this difficult decision? Thanks a lot! |

Since it is not an official job, but will gain you valuable experience, I would go and try to not make the project last any longer than necessary. Worry about being homesick only if you happen to become so while you are away.
Internships offer great and valuable experience; I would not turn one down! Since it serves both art and science, it is almost like doing two internships in one. Go for it!
