I have a job interview next week and it has taken me a while to find a job so i don't want to blow it. The problem though is that I have had another invite for a job interview for a position abroad but if I do get the job i won't start for at least another 4-5 months.

My question is that the interview for the job that starts in september isn't until 19th May, but if i were to get the job (for the interview i have next week) i will only be there for a few weeks before the interview for the job in japan. So do you think i should tell the interviewer that i need a day off on 19th may during the interview or should i try to get the job first and then, if i get the job, ask for a day off even though i have only been there for a few weeks? (if it helps i live in UK and the interviewer is the director of the company; established company starting up a new office)

Also if i go to the interview and tell them, then what should i say when they ask why i couldn't work that day? i

Thanks

I would go to your interview, get the job, and then go from there. If the topic comes up during the interview of any pre planned vacations then just tell them you have an appointment on that date that you cannot reschedule and that you must attend. Do not provide them with any other details.

You really only need to address this once you have been offered the position that you are initially interviewing for. If you are made the job offer, at that point it is appropriate to tell them that you would like them to know that you have a pre-scheduled committment (using the word "committment" rather than "appointment" is better) on the 19th that you are unable to change and is this acceptable? They will probably not ask what it is for, but if they do just say it is a personal matter.
Don't pre-empt anything by mentioning it before you have even been offered the position. For good interview guidance and advice you can go to http://www.best-job-interview.com

Thanks for the advice. I had the interview last week and i didn't say anything about needing time off. I am not looking to optimistic about the job though because the guy basically told me that he was trying to get one of his competitors workers to come and work for him and if that does happen then me and the other 8 people trying for the jobs are out of luck. its times like this when it makes it completely clear that small businesses really dont care about employees, which was funny after he gave a speach about how the company was like a family.
