Hi there!!!
I have a job interview coming up next week and I'm dreading the question if I had been fired from a job...and/or of course why I left my last employer. Here's the story:

I was working for a company that had a 'parent company' that went bankrupt. Our company went out and got a "new" parent company however my pay was drastically cut ($10,000+ paycut) so during that time we were switching parent companies I took another job..I had doubts about the "new" job but I was so pissed off at my other employer about the paycut I wasn't even thinking when I took the new job.

So I started the new job...and it was the absolute worst place I had ever encountered. The people were just awful and there was no rhyme or reason to anything they did--I felt like I was going to prison everyday (although prison would've been better). Well I was on the verge of leaving the place because I couldn't take it anymore...however the same day I was contemplating on leaving they had my things all packed up by the door when I got there in the morning. I had made a "mistake" the day before and the manager flew off the handle and called me at home and said I had ruined his company...etc (and I'm not kidding..it was a little mistake). So yeah...that is why I was going to quit--there's no reason for them to have treated me that way and that job was not worth it.

Anyways...so I technically was "fired"...or I'd like to say "let go"..which was fine and dandy with me. BUT now....I have a job interview coming up next week and I know on their application form it asks if I was ever fired from a job. Technically I was...but I didn't even have that job listed on my resume because I was only there for about 1.5 months. I have worked at other companies for several years and have an impeccable reputation with all of them. I just don't know how I will describe me leaving the one job (where they cut my pay)...if I don't say I took another job (the awful one). I mean there were other reasons why I left the one place that cut my pay..but pay was the primary reason.

Any suggestions on what I should say at my interview?? Please advise!! Thanks

Be honest. Technically you were fired, so be truthful about the question and elaborate on it within reason if asked. Whatever you do though do not badmouth the previous employer as it will only hurt you during this interview. If the interviewer likes you they will give you a chance to explain.

Hope I'm not too late. Don't list that former employer, period. Yeah, you'll have to engage in a little "creative thinking" (aka lying) to account for that time. Tell 'em you were abducted and helped make crop circles in Kansas. Tell 'em anything you want to. "Personal matters" always works. Just remember that whatever you tell them about that period of time must become the "truth" and if you're hired there or anywhere else, you must never, ever speak of that "former" employer. He simply must cease to exist in your thoughts....at least until you're putting a curse on him!

Ahemz...Randy....do not teach the job seeker to lie !!! You shouldn't do that....But you're allowed to bend the truth (not, but who cares?) if it helps you. You can also "forget" to specify something,....you know what I mean. If the situation is so serious, you are allowed, provided that you do not fail and give yourself away Very Happy

Yeah, most people get into trouble not for lying, but for lying badly!
