Goodday,

Ive read certain interview books that say "always" negotiate salary. Is this a wise approach if youve been out of work & after an interview your offered the job. Shouldnt you err on the safe side & just take the job? summerized:
1.) should you always negotiate salary?
2.) should you negotiate if you been out of work & then offered a job?

Thank you

You should first research the typical pay range for the job then use it as a base to negotiate. Negotiation does not have to be aggressive as the word itself connotates. Simply let them talk first and respond from that.

Not always. Only when you think you are not being paid according to the work you are supposed to do there. But the books have something else in mind. It's a stratey. In order to get the amount you want, you always need to ask for a little bit higher. In this way, you will (probably) be offered the amount you initially wanted Very Happy

You can negotiate under almost any circumstances.

I can see you're into reading books Smile) Here's what we have:

...and moooore.

But when it comes to salary negotiations, you have to do a preliminary research to see the average amount you can get for your position. Then, this taken into account, you can ask for a little bit higher. Show yourself flexible in negotiation, but make your point by bringing out good arguments "I think I should be paid more because of this and that".

It is always good to negotiate after you have been offered the job. By being out of work for a while, you are generally not in a very strong position to negotiate. So you can be less demanding & not ask for much more than what they are offering. "Certainly wouldn't say something like I won't accept this joow xyz figure".

You might want to have a look at http://kmd-solutions.com/salary_negotiation_example.htm & http://kmd-solutions.com/salary_negotiation_coaching.htm
